Another day of discovering all of the cool things about OS X. I downloaded a cool app named Quicksilver the other day on the recommendation of a guy named Leo Laporte.
This is going to be hard to explain, but Quicksilver is sort of like an application launcher, but so much more at the same time. I’ve never seen an application like this for Windows, so before I get too far into preaching how cool all this OS X software is will someone please let me know of a Windows equivalent of Quicksilver?
Let me give you a little info on what Quicksilver does, I won’t get too detailed because I have got a lot more to learn about this app still.
I have Quicksilver running in the background all the time, it is “launched” with a key combo, for me it is “Command + spacebar”. When Quicksilver opens it opens with information pertaining to whatever app you have in focus. For example, when I have Photoshop open, and I initiate Quicksilver, it opens with Photoshop listed in the “main box”, below the “main box” is a list of commands pertaining to Photoshop. (I think that Quicksilver scans the application for a list of all available commands in that application.)
So let’s say that I select within the list of Photoshop commands “Image—Resize---40%--File---Save As---*whatever name*” That string of events is saved in Quicksilver and I can make that string of events be placed at the “top” of available commands within Quicksilvers settings for Photoshop. So the NEXT TIME I envoke Quicksilver while Photoshop is open (by hitting command + spacebar) all I have to do is hit Return (enter) to have it execute that string of commands automatically! And Quicksilver learns the most frequently used strings of commands and ranks them according to use. So this way if you have say, 5 very frequently used strings of commands for Photoshop, then all you do is hit “command + spacebar” then arrow down to the command set you want, and hit enter, and you’re done! It’s way easier than navigating through all the menus in Photoshop to execute that string of events. And it works with almost any application!
It’s Quick..It’s Silver…It’s QUICKSILVER!
